EMAIL: tiger@mgl.ca NAME: Chris Klein TOPIC: Glass COPYRIGHT: I SUBMIT TO THE STANDARD RAYTRACING COMPETITION COPYRIGHT TITLE: "Candlelight" COUNTRY: Canada WEBPAGE: http://www.mgl.ca/~tiger/ RENDERER USED: Povray 3.0 (dos version) TOOLS USED: Moray 2.0 RENDER TIME: 67 minutes HARDWARE USED: Pentium 90 IMAGE DESCRIPTION: This image is dedicated to the four of my friends who all (separately) were engaged in the last 6 months... Rebecca, Jeremy, Matt, and of course, Theressa. Thanks for the idea, and thanks for giving me something to grumble about : ) DESCRIPTION OF HOW THIS IMAGE WAS CREATED: I've been raytracing, technically, for 4 or 5 years (on and off- mostly off), but this is only the second complete "Scene" I have finished, and the first I've submitted to the IRTC. I would have liked to put a few more last minute touches in, but the workload of 4th year univ made it a struggle to finish it on time. Objects: The winebottle and wineglasses are rotational sweeps with glass textures. Moray has very nice sweep tools, they weren't easy to get right but far easier than scripting would have been. The bottle and glasses have, in fact, wine in them.. at some angles it's visible, at others it's not. The wine label comes from the Wine Label Gallery: http://www.zipling.net/users/mak/winelabels/Welcome.html The candle is pretty simple. I wanted to add blobs of melted wax but could never get a satisfactory effect. The flame.. I love the flame.. was a stroke of luck, another rot sweep with a gradient Z texture turbulated somewhat. The candleholder is a simple box, cut away into hexagonal, angular form and given a nice IOR. The ring & box are also relatively simple, a rounded box made of boxes, cylinders and spheres. If it's one thing I can do, it's CSG. : ) The ring is a torus, with a diamond again a cutaway box. The cloth is done with a bezier patch. The glow around the candle is an emitting halo that I added by hand after finishing my Moray work. Also, other script editting included some memory-saving work (Moray made two seperate 1.6MB includes for each identical wineglass.. as it was it still required 20MB to render!). Post-processing was limited to a bit of gamma correction and the title/signature addition in PaintShopPro. I estimate something in the region of 30 hours went into this project, over a period of about a month, but that could be as much as 10 hours off in either direction, I didn't keep track. I had a lot of fun and hope to get some useful critiques back. Finally, the scene files are available only if you ask me really nicely. I didn't want to upload them because there are about 6MB worth of include files there! However I will make them available, as well as the Moray scene file, if asked. --Chris "Tiger" Klein
