940912 No definitive news, or gnus either {This line added when archived.} =========================================================================== // Amiga Update - News and Rumors // \X/ (A Very Occasional Newsletter) \X/ =========================================================================== Good morning! There's nothing definite on C= to report at the moment, but there are some items of interest to send your way. Following is the transcript of "AmigaWorld"`s latest phone message: "Hi, This is Dan Sullivan, Editor of AmigaWorld. It's Thursday, September 8th. No official announcement has yet been made about the settlement of the Commodore Liquidation. We do, however, have a change in the hotline update number that I will give at the end of this message. Indications are that David Pleasance and the Commodore UK group is still the front runner. Pleasance made an unconditional bid to the liquidators this week in the hopes of speeding up the conclusion of the negotiations. However, he believes that he will not hear any official word on it until after September 15th at the earliest. All future updates of this message will no longer be made on our 1-800 number. We've received more than 50,000 calls and the cost has run into the tens of thousands of dollars. Mainly because a large number of people call every day, and sometimes more than once a day, to hear the same message repeated. New updates, however, will be available on a direct dial line at 603-924-2195. That's 603-924-2195. That number will go into operation sometime early next week if there is any new message to give to you. Our switchboard cannot put you through to this line, you must dial it directly for future updates. Thank you." Bye for now ---------- Personal thoughts from Brad; Besides UK as the front-runner, it looks like US company CEI is still in the running, as a dark horse. If CEI won the bidding, they would concentrate on North America. However, CEI might very well drop the 1200 line. If UK wins, they will concentrate on Europe but will not ignore America. They will probably keep the entire line intact. ======================== "seaQuest DSV" A DUD? Online discussions on "Portal" last night indicate the folks doing the "seaQuest" TV series don't expect it to last through the coming season. Reason given is the quality of the writing. One script apparently has them doing time travel in the sub! Sounds like a reprise of the horrid submarine based show "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea" to me. The animators are described as "aghast". How sad. Next Sunday is the two hour season premier on Fox, if you'd like to see for yourself. I understand there have been some interesting changes in the modeling this year. It might be worth a look to see what one of the best "Toaster" teams has come up with. Incidentally, the same team that does "seaQuest" is apparently working on the new "Voyager" Star Trek series. Sure a lot of use being made of a computer now officially out of business! ======================== WANTED TO BUY - A2000 A fellow Watertown Amigan beat on our door yesterday (well, he actually rang the bell). He`s looking for a basic A2000 at an appropriate price - meaning what one's REALLY worth these days. If you have one to sell or know of one, inform me and I'll see the message gets passed along. ======================== YOU MISSED IT!? Saturday's meeting of the Watertown Area Computer User's Group had one of the best "Lightwave" demonstrations I've ever seen. It provided some good insight as to how the folks doing "Babylon 5", "seaQuest DSV", "The X Files", and so on get the job done. If you're interested in future meetings, or talking to any of our members who work in this area, let me know. We have a few who really know what they're doing. ======================== That's it for now, More as we hear about it. Brad
